MEN THE BRENHAM, KANSAS METEORITE COLLECTIBLE An authentic piece from on one of the actual Brenham, Kansas pallasites found by meteorite hunters Geoffrey Notkin and Steve Arnold while filming Meteorite Men |
Steve stunned the scientific community in the fall of 2005 when he discovered a 1,430-lb pallasite meteorite buried in a cornfield near Brenham, Kansas. It is the largest of its type ever found in North America. Pallasites are unique among meteorites as they are composed of iron-nickel and olivine crystals (the gemstone peridot). Geoffrey is a photographer and science writer and has chronicled their adventures for Meteorite magazine, Rock & Gem, Seed, Sci Q, and many other national and international publications. The two friends have made documentaries about meteorite hunting for Discovery, National Geographic, The History Channel, PBS, and The Travel Channel. In the fall of 2008 Steve and Geoffrey starred in a new one-hour adventure show Meteorite Men for Discovery Science. The show premieres on Sunday, May 10, 2009. During location filming at the Brenham site they discovered another large pallasite meteorite and used part of it to produce an intriguing collectible. Part of the mass was cut, polished, and prepared into slices that show off the Brenham meteorite's beautiful green olivine crystals. The slices were then set in a clear lucite block. The initial pre-broadcast special edition is strictly limited to 100 pieces, and each is accompanied by a color 8 1/2 x 11 and numbered certificate of authenticity along with an exclusive photo of the meteorite's excavation, personally signed by Steve and Geoffrey, and notes about the find location.
