A MAJOR NEW METEORITE DISCOVERY!
COFFEYVILLE (H5)
A 79-pound chondrite discovered in Kansas
Offered exclusively by Aerolite Meteorites and Steve Arnold Meteorites

The Aerolite offices receive hundreds of meteorite identification requests each year with the vast majority being what we term "meteorwrongs." (See meteorite identification page) Occasionally we receive the real thing, as was the case when residents of Coffeyville, Kansas sent us a small sample for identification.

Landowners had noticed a large and unusual rock on their property, something different from other rocks in the area. After digging the 79-pound specimen out of the ground they took it home, washed it off and began conducting internet research. They performed the recommended identification tests on the possible meteorite, contacted the Aerolite offices and—at our request—sent a sample. We immediately recognized it as a chondrite, and the classification was performed by our colleague Dr. Jeffrey Grossman with the US Geological Survey. We have recommended Coffeyville to the Nomenclature Committee and expect that name to be accepted.

CLASSIFICATION RESULTS:

Coffeyville (provisional, expected to be accepted by NomComm)
H5, olivine Fa18.7, low-Ca pyroxene Fs16.7Wo1.6
Shock stage S2, weathering grade W3
